Add a section to each course syllabus that identifies how the course builds on knowledge and skills from the previous course or grade level and how it prepares students for the next course or grade level.
Partner with local colleges and universities for workshops that help faculty renew and deepen their content knowledge understanding. Such workshops need to go into depth on the big ideas of the discipline or subject area and how to teach them.
Use the CourseCreate and CoursePathway tools described in the appendix and available at https://collegeready.epiconline.org/portal/public/to focus courses on big ideas, enduring understandings, and key concepts of the subject in order to create more time to go into greater depth in these areas.
Look at the Common Core State Standards across grade levels to become more familiar with how they progress. Notice where prior learnings shape expectations at a subsequent grade level. Examine how well courses in the school take into account prior and subsequent knowledge and skill development.
