An exploration of the Roadtrip Nation Experience, using the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s Deeper Learning Rubric to assess the fostering of deeper learning.
EPIC conducted a crosswalk study between the Deeper Learning Skills (DLS) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The purpose of the crosswalk was to understand the ways in which strategies for deeper learning relate to the CCSS.
Examine the example performance tasks that represent points along the continuum presented in figure 10.1 (Continuum of Assessment for Deeper Learning). Which kind of tasks along the continuum are used in classrooms in your school? What would have to occur for your school to the next type of task on the continuum?

Download sample ThinkReady tasks (https://collegeready.epiconline.org/info/thinkready.dot) and have teachers do their own task development using these as a template. Set the goal of having all classrooms do at least one activity that requires deeper learning skills identified in chapter 5.
Read Brain Rules by John Medina (http://brainrules.net) for ideas on how to improve and deepen student learning based on principles from brain research.
Institute awards and recognition for student work that reflects deeper learning, including projects and demonstrations that require research, analysis, and thought. Structure these awards and recognition programs with enough categories and opportunities for students who are not the highest achievers but who produce quality work to be recognized. Publicize the results schoolwide.
